A Garden for Everyone
A Garden for Everyone – Meran’s New Green Project
Meran was one of seven European cities chosen to take part in the EU environmental project JUSTNature. The goal: to make cities greener and more livable – for people and for nature. In Meran, a previously underused green space was selected and completely reimagined together with local residents.

In three exciting workshops, citizens of Meran shared their ideas. The big question was:
How can a public green space be designed to provide cooling and relaxation in summer – and at the same time become a refuge for plants and animals?
From all the suggestions, a plan was developed for the “Garden for Everyone” – a place to relax, get involved, and explore.
The garden was equipped with high-quality wooden furniture – designed by landscape architect Rosa Sagmeister from in.ge.na and produced by the company euroform w. The design wasn’t just stylish, it also created the perfect hangout spot, especially during hot summer days.
A major wish of the people was to include berry bushes and raised beds. From the following spring, locals, together with the city gardening team, planted public vegetable beds – for growing, learning, and tasting.
They also created:
• Natural hedges,
• a bed with drought-resistant plants,
• and a small wildflower meadow.
Informational signs help visitors understand why it’s okay for flowers to wither in a natural garden, and why a “wild corner” makes a perfect hiding spot for animals like hedgehogs.
At Winkelweg, this special place came to life: the “Garden for Everyone” – a spot to relax, help out, learn, and be amazed.
